This Mumbai-based firm adheres to the eternal law that all bubbles must burst—literally. And when, where and how they burst are of critical importance to them. The four-year-old company, which is based on a unique idea, works on the principle of specially created and strategically released bubbles to eliminate unwanted liquid-based micro-organisms such as algae, bacteria or fungi.

HyCa makes reactors that use a phenomenon called ‘hydro-dynamic cavitation’ to release high-velocity jets of fluid at lower pressure than the surrounding liquid. This results in the formation of ‘bubbles’, which proceed to pop, releasing—for a nanosecond—heat equivalent to the sun’s surface. This heat and the shock of the bubble burst lacerate the surrounding microbes. Anjan Mukherjee, a former marine
consultant and co-founder of HyCa says, “Apart from clearing water of micro-organic life, the cavitation process can also accelerate chemical reactions within the fluid.”

HyCa has two patent-pending reactors, respectively, to prevent biofouling in water-cooling towers and cleanse ballast water (carried by empty cargo ships for stability) of invasive marine life. Watercooling reactors used in sectors such as manufacturing, pharma and engineering goods to carry heat away from overheated systems, are often breeding grounds for biological life.

Over time, these micro-organisms, and algae accumulate and hamper the smooth functioning of the system. The result—increased power consumption and material cost with an additional risk of disease to those coming in contact with the contaminated water. Mukherjee claims that HyCa’s product can steadily eliminate these microorganisms with a payback time from a year to a year-and-a-half. He informs that the Taj Mahal hotel in Mumbai is among the first companies to install a HyCa reactor for its air-conditioning system. “The worldwide market for the product could run into billions of dollars,” says Mukherjee.

The second type of reactor works to eliminate marine organisms that, when released into the water (when a ship empties its ballast at the destination), could disturb the ecological balance. Mukherjee anticipates that as and when maritime laws governing compulsory control of quality of ballast water come into effect, his product will have a lucrative market. Godrej Industries has picked up a stake in HyCa and Mukherjee is confident that the company will expand into overseas markets sometime next year.
